Free Parking in South Mumbai: A Breath of Fresh Air for Motorists
The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has finally heard the pleas of motorists and announced free parking at 10 locations in South Mumbai’s A Ward, covering key areas such as Fort, Colaba, and Nariman Point. This decision comes as a major relief to the citizens who have been grappling with the issue of exorbitant parking fees and unauthorized collections by contractors.
The Story Behind the Decision
For long, motorists have been complaining about the contractors who were allegedly overcharging citizens and collecting fees without proper authorization. The BMC, taking cognizance of these complaints, decided to take action and conducted a sting operation. The operation revealed the sorry state of affairs, with one contractor found guilty of not only overcharging but also permitting parking in no-parking zones. A police complaint was subsequently registered against the errant contractor.
The Roads Where Parking is Now Free
The BMC has identified 10 locations in A Ward where parking will now be free. These include:
- Jamnalal Bajaj Marg
- Dorabji Tata Road
- The traffic island opposite Eros Cinema (both have been made free since June 1)
- Walchand Hirachand Marg Part 2
- The western side of Ramjibhai Kamani Marg along with Currimbhoy Marg
- Badruddin Tayyabji Marg
- Mudrana Shetty Lane
- Tamarind Lane
- Horniman Circle
- V N Road
- Homji Street
- Nagindas Master Lane
A Welcome Move
Former BJP Councillor Makarand Narwekar, who had been demanding free parking in areas where contracts had expired, has welcomed the move. “Finally, the BMC has come to its senses and taken a decision in the interest of the public. This free parking should continue until a new pay-and-park policy with stricter transparency and accountability measures is implemented,” he said. Narwekar’s sentiments resonate with the citizens who have been bearing the brunt of exorbitant parking fees for far too long.
The Importance of A Ward
A Ward, which includes heritage zones and major tourist spots, experiences high vehicular traffic due to the concentration of government offices, commercial centres, and cultural landmarks. The area is a hub of activity, with thousands of people visiting the iconic landmarks, offices, and shopping centres every day. The BMC’s decision to provide free parking in this area will undoubtedly come as a huge relief to the motorists who visit these areas regularly.
The Financial Implications
The BMC usually charges Rs 70 for four-wheelers and Rs 20 for two-wheelers, but has now decided not to renew contracts with 24 private parking contractors in the ward. This decision is expected to result in significant financial implications for the contractors who have been milking the system for years. However, for the motorists, this decision comes as a blessing, saving them thousands of rupees in parking fees every month.
A New Pay-and-Park Policy on the Anvil
The BMC’s decision to provide free parking in A Ward is seen as a temporary measure until a new pay-and-park policy is implemented. The civic body is expected to come up with a more transparent and accountable policy, which will ensure that motorists are not fleeced by contractors. The new policy is expected to have stricter guidelines, ensuring that contractors do not overcharge citizens and that parking is only allowed in designated areas.
The Way Forward
The BMC’s decision to provide free parking in A Ward is a step in the right direction. It is a move that will bring relief to thousands of motorists who visit the area every day. However, the civic body needs to ensure that the new pay-and-park policy is implemented soon, with stricter transparency and accountability measures. This will ensure that the system is fair and that motorists are not taken for a ride by unscrupulous contractors. For now, motorists can breathe a sigh of relief, knowing that they can park their vehicles in A Ward without breaking the bank.
