The Lingering Threat of Covid-19: Expert Warns of Possible Surges Every 6-8 Months
As the world grapples with the ongoing pandemic, a leading expert has sounded a warning bell, stating that Covid-19 is likely to stay and surge every 6-8 months. Dr. Soumya Swaminathan, Chairperson of MSSRF and advisor to the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, made this remarks at the launch of the livelihood support programme for small-scale fishermen at MSSRF Fish For All Research and Training Center in Poompuhar, Mayiladuthurai district.
A New Normal: Living with Covid-19
Dr. Swaminathan emphasized that people need to be careful and follow Covid-19 guidelines, as the virus is here to stay, much like the common cold. The expert stated that while the virus is likely to cause mild effects in most people, elders and those with underlying health conditions need to be more cautious.
"It’s crucial that we take precautions and follow guidelines to prevent the spread of the virus," Dr. Swaminathan stressed. "We need to be prepared for possible surges every 6-8 months and take proactive measures to protect ourselves and our loved ones."
Vaccination: The Key to Prevention
On the topic of Covid vaccination, Dr. Swaminathan reassured that the vaccines are safe and have minimal side effects. However, she added that those who had contracted Covid earlier may experience reactions to comorbidities.
MSSRF’s Initiatives: Supporting Fishermen and Coastal Communities
Earlier, MSSRF had initiated an program for five villages in Mayiladuthurai and Cuddalore districts, which aims to provide training and development activities for 1,500 families over the next three years. Head of the centre, S Velvizhi, stated that the program will focus on enhancing the livelihoods of small-scale fishermen and promoting sustainable fishing practices.
New Research: Studying the Impact of Climate Change on Fisherfolk
Dr. Swaminathan announced that MSSRF is embarking on new research to study the impact of prolonged heat and humidity on the health of fisherfolk in coastal districts. The research will also focus on developing an early warning tool integrated with artificial intelligence to warn fisherfolk about potential health risks.
A Warning for Fisherfolk: High Blood Pressure and Diabetes
According to surveys, fisherfolk have a high possibility of developing high blood pressure and diabetes due to exposure to salty wind and consumption of salty food. Dr. Swaminathan emphasized the importance of regular check-ups and controlling blood pressure to prevent these conditions.
Stay Informed, Stay Safe
As we navigate the ongoing pandemic, it’s essential to stay informed and take proactive measures to protect ourselves and our communities. By following guidelines, getting vaccinated, and taking care of our health, we can reduce the risk of Covid-19 and its impact on our lives.
