In a heartwarming display of global solidarity, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) has launched a humanitarian initiative to combat malnutrition among children and women in Socotra Island, Yemen. This commendable effort is part of the strategic partnership between the UAE and the World Health Organisation (WHO), with the Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan Foundation for Humanitarian Works at the helm.

A Crisis of Epic Proportions

The statistics are alarming. The Global Acute Malnutrition (GAM) rate in Socotra Island has reached a staggering 10.9%, while the Severe Acute Malnutrition (SAM) rate stands at 1.6% among children under five. These numbers are a stark reminder of the pressing health issues that plague this island nation. The UAE’s timely intervention is a beacon of hope for the people of Socotra, who have been grappling with nutritional inadequacy and healthcare challenges for far too long.

A Commitment to Global Responsibility

Mohamed Haji Al Khouri, Director-General of the Khalifa Foundation, emphasized the UAE’s humanitarian and global responsibility to develop communities and enhance critical health services. "This initiative stems from the enduring humanitarian legacy of the late Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan and the leadership of President His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan. We are determined to effectively address food and health challenges faced by women and children in Socotra, in collaboration with the WHO," he said.

A Comprehensive Plan of Action

The joint initiative between the UAE and WHO aims to reduce maternal and child mortality caused by malnutrition through a comprehensive plan of action spanning over two years. This will involve enhancing maternal, infant, and child care services, improving emergency preparedness and response to epidemics, and strengthening healthcare infrastructure in Socotra. The Khalifa Foundation will work with the WHO to develop appropriate solutions to nutritional and health challenges using a new survey based on current data.

Building Resilient Health Systems

Acting WHO Representative in Yemen, Dr. Ferima Coulibaly-Zerbo, applauded the joint effort, saying, "This initiative reflects our shared vision of building resilient health systems in Yemen. Together with the UAE and national authorities, we are working to address urgent needs and lay the foundation for long-term health security on the Island." The partnership between the UAE and WHO aims to build stronger, more responsive, and more equitable health systems to serve the people of Socotra and contribute to a healthier, more resilient Yemen.

Sustainable Solutions for a Brighter Future

The initiative will focus on implementing sustainable solutions for malnutrition, ensuring food security, raising community awareness, and improving disease surveillance for more effective medical interventions. By addressing the root causes of malnutrition and healthcare challenges, the UAE and WHO hope to create a brighter future for the people of Socotra Island. This humanitarian initiative is a shining example of global cooperation and a testament to the power of collective action in the face of adversity.
