Heatwave Alert: Rajasthan Witnesses 344 Heatstroke Cases, No Fatalities Reported So Far

As the mercury rises across Rajasthan, health officials have reported a total of 344 heatstroke cases this year, with no deaths recorded so far. The health department has taken proactive measures to ensure the treatment and management of heatwave-related illnesses in hospitals across the state.

A Significant Improvement from 2024

According to Dr. Narottam Sharma, nodal officer for climate change, health department, the state has seen a significant improvement in the number of heatstroke cases compared to 2024. "Last year, we reported over 6,000 cases and 17 heatstroke deaths. However, this year, we have only reported 344 cases, and no fatalities have occurred," he said.

Hospitals Equipped to Handle Heat-Related Illnesses

Hospitals across the state have been equipped to handle heat-related illnesses, with SMS Medical College, Jaipur, issuing a public advisory warning against the use of paracetamol for heat-induced fever. "Heatstroke fever is not caused by bacterial, viral, or other infections. Antipyretics like paracetamol are ineffective because there are no pyrogens involved," said Dr. Sunil Mahawar, nodal officer (seasonal diseases), SMS Medical College.

The Dangers of Heatstroke

Heatstroke is a medical emergency that can cause body temperatures to exceed 104°F. In such instances, patients should avoid self-medication and seek immediate hospital care. "Heatstroke is a life-threatening condition that can affect the functioning of kidneys, liver, brain, and other organs. The body’s thermoregulatory mechanism works for a certain limit, but after some time, the mechanism gives up due to persistent exposure to heat, causing heatstroke," Dr. Mahawar added.

Precautions to Take

To avoid the risk of heatwave-related illnesses, individuals should take precautions such as wearing light-colored clothes, using umbrellas and caps when exposed to sunlight, and drinking water and lemon water before going out in the sun. "It is essential to stay hydrated and avoid direct sun exposure, especially during peak hours," said Dr. Anita Meena, former consultant (homeopathy), AYUSH.
