Anil Kapoor: The Evolution of a Legendary Actor
As we sit down with Anil Kapoor, we can’t help but feel a sense of nostalgia wash over us. With a career spanning over four decades, Anil has played some of the most iconic roles in Indian cinema. And as we approach the 10-year anniversary of Zoya Akhtar’s hit family drama, Dil Dhadakne Do, on June 5, we take a walk down memory lane with the actor.
The Journey Begins
When asked about his first reaction to Zoya’s approach for Dil Dhadakne Do, Anil reveals, "My first reaction was ‘No.’ The first time when she spoke to me about it at Javed Akhtar’s house, she was thinking of casting Ranbir Kapoor and Kareena Kapoor as the leads. I hadn’t heard the story then. Later, when she narrated the script to me, Ranveer Singh was on board then. I said, ‘Ye kya Ranveer ke baap ka role, nahi yaar.’" It’s clear that Anil was hesitant to take on the role, but what changed his mind?
The Turning Point
As it often does, family played a significant role in Anil’s decision to join the project. "My son Harsh was responsible," he says with a smile. "He’d also convinced me to do Slumdog Millionaire in 2007. He told me, ‘It’s okay yaar, you’ve done enough of running around the trees. Do this grey character!’ With Dil Dhadakne Do again, he told me to not think of it as a father, but as a character." It’s evident that Harsh’s words of wisdom struck a chord with Anil, and he eventually came on board.
Working with Zoya Akhtar
Anil’s experience working with Zoya was nothing short of phenomenal. "For him, it was the filmmaker," he says, referring to Harsh’s advice. "Both the filmmakers had made good films. You shouldn’t miss out on the opportunity to work with a good filmmaker." When asked if he saw glimpses of Javed Akhtar in Zoya, Anil responds, "No, all three of them are completely different. Zoya and Farhan have their own individualities and strengths. Of course, Javed sahab is Javed sahab yaar. You have talent like that once in a century."
Getting into Character
As Anil delved into the role of Kamal Mehra, he reveals that he drew inspiration from his own life experiences. "He’s a businessman going through tough times. But sometimes, you’ve to put up a front. He’s not quite progressive in his thinking, and is a male chauvinist. It’s either his way or highway." To prepare for the role, Anil worked closely with dialect coaches and drew references from his own uncles who stayed in Delhi.
The Making of Gallan Goodiyan
One of the most memorable moments from the film is the song Gallan Goodiyan, which features Anil and the rest of the cast letting loose and having a blast. "Zoya was very clear she wanted to do it in one shot," Anil recalls. "We rehearsed first in Mumbai, and then on cruise. So we were very prepped. But we also really had a lot of fun doing that song."
The Impact of Dil Dhadakne Do
As we reflect on the film’s impact, it’s clear that Dil Dhadakne Do has left a lasting impression on audiences. "It’s surprising that this film has got such long legs," Anil says. "People still resonate with it. There are several cruises named Dil Dhadakne Do. There are still weddings and bachelor’s parties being done exactly like Dil Dhadakne Do." The film’s success can be attributed to its relatable storyline, memorable characters, and the incredible cast that brought it all to life.
Avoiding Typecasting
After the success of Dil Dhadakne Do, Anil was careful not to get typecast in similar roles. "I try not to repeat myself," he says. "I did a lot of characters like Welcome Back, Malang, Rennervations, and Fighter, which are very different from Dil Dhadakne Do." When asked how he avoids taking on roles that might lead to typecasting, Anil responds, "I say N-O, simple. Typecast toh hone nahi doonga khud ko, hopefully."
Looking Back and Moving Forward
As we conclude our conversation with Anil, it’s evident that he’s grateful for the journey he’s been on. With a career spanning over four decades, he’s had the opportunity to work with some of the most talented filmmakers and actors in the industry. And as he looks to the future, Anil is excited to take on new challenges and work with great minds from around the world. "I may not play the lead or have the best role in the film, but I just want to work with those great minds," he says. With his infectious enthusiasm and passion for his craft, it’s clear that Anil Kapoor will continue to leave his mark on Indian cinema for years to come.
