Devastation in Edmonton: Residents Wake Up to Trail of Destruction After Cube Van Smashes Vehicles
Residents of the Inglewood neighbourhood in central Edmonton woke up to a scene of utter chaos and destruction on Monday morning. A white cube van had smashed into several parked vehicles, leaving a trail of devastation in its wake. The incident, which occurred at around 3:45 a.m., was captured on video and has left many in the community shaken.
A Night of Madness
The van, which was driving erratically, rammed into several parked vehicles on 123 Street between 114 and 115 avenues. One resident described the scene as "madness," with the van smashing into a pickup truck at least eight times over the course of a minute. The sound of screeching tires and crunching metal filled the air, leaving neighbours in a state of panic.
"I was pretty bewildered when I woke up this morning and heard what happened," said resident Justin Smalley. "It sort of looked like a movie set, you know, by the time everybody got here with all the lights and everything."
Massive Damage
The damage caused by the cube van was extensive, with multiple vehicles suffering significant damage. Trees and lawns on the side of the road were also destroyed, leaving the neighbourhood looking like a war zone. Some residents were lucky, with their vehicles escaping damage, while others were not so fortunate.
"I’m glad I parked in my garage last night," said Anne-Marie Downey, a resident of the area. "Some people’s cars were totalled while others say they got lucky and their vehicle was spared."
Arrest Made
The Edmonton Police Service responded quickly to the incident, boxing in the cube van and arresting a 55-year-old man. He is expected to be charged with impaired driving. The police investigation is ongoing, and residents are still trying to come to terms with the destruction caused by the incident.
A Close Call
For some residents, the incident was a close call. Justin Smalley’s car was just inches away from being hit by the van, which was stopped by his recently-planted garden full of rocks and stumps. "I think the truck was about 10 inches away from hitting our car and pushing it into our garage or through our garage door," he said. "We lucked out pretty good compared to the rest of the neighbours."
Community in Shock
The incident has left the community in shock, with many residents struggling to understand why someone would engage in such reckless behaviour. As the neighbourhood begins to clean up the damage, residents are coming together to support each other.
If you or someone you know has been affected by this incident, there are resources available to help. The City of Edmonton offers a range of support services for residents who have been impacted by crime or other traumatic events.
