Tragic Death After Robotic Hernia Surgery: A Family’s Nightmare
A devastating incident has shaken the city of Noida, where a 35-year-old man, Ujjawal Chaudhary, lost his life days after undergoing robotic hernia surgery at a private hospital in Kaushambi. The family of the deceased has alleged medical negligence, sparking a widespread outcry and demanding justice for their loved one.
The Fateful Surgery
Ujjawal was admitted to Yashoda Super Speciality Hospital on May 26 and underwent a 4.5-hour robotic hernia surgery, which is unusually long compared to the standard one-hour procedure. The family claims that during the surgery, Ujjawal suffered a bowel injury, but the doctors initially downplayed the complication, assuring them that it had been addressed.
A Descent into Agony
However, the next day, Ujjawal’s condition took a turn for the worse. He experienced excruciating abdominal pain, bloating, and respiratory distress. His family was shocked and distressed by the sudden deterioration of his health. Arpit, Ujjawal’s brother, recounted the harrowing experience, "The pre-surgery checks and diagnostics on May 23 indicated healthy vitals and normal functioning of all organs. The ultrasound report showed that only an umbilical hernia had to be treated. Doctors suggested we go for robotic surgery."
A Series of Blunders
The family alleges that the surgery was delayed by three hours, and when Ujjawal was finally wheeled into the operating theater, the procedure lasted an unprecedented 4.5 hours. The surgeon informed them that there were some "complications" during the surgery, but assured them that they had been fixed. However, the family claims that the doctor’s tone was unsettling, and he advised them to "pray."
A Cry for Help
As Ujjawal’s condition continued to deteriorate, his family desperately sought help. They contacted the doctor, who was allegedly out of station, and were told that a medical team had been informed. The doctor mentioned that there was a minor cut on the intestine during the surgery, which was healed post-surgery. However, the family claims that Ujjawal underwent another emergency surgery to extract around 6 liters of waste from his body, and a subsequent ultrasound revealed a 22mm intestinal rupture and internal leakage.
A Tragic Conclusion
Ujjawal’s condition rapidly deteriorated, and he succumbed to cardiac arrest and kidney failure on June 2. The family has filed a complaint with the chief medical officer, Akhilesh Mohan, and the district magistrate has ordered a probe committee to investigate the matter and submit a report within a month.
The Hospital’s Response
A spokesperson for the hospital claimed that Ujjawal’s condition remained stable after the surgery, but he developed breathing difficulties and abdominal bloating during the post-operative recovery phase. The hospital allegedly took prompt action, shifting him to the ICU and performing another major abdominal surgery due to perforation peritonitis. However, despite the efforts, Ujjawal’s condition continued to worsen, and he eventually passed away.
